An episode film that "bids farewell to classical cinema" (A. Kluge). Fragments of reality that all still strictly follow one thought - how one moment in time can swallow up everything that has happened beforehand and afterwards. There's the daughter of the porter couple in Warsaw who surrenders herself to a German soldier in order to preserve the historical Polish film treasures. There is the completely indispensable one, who suddenly becomes unnecessary because the boss prefers someone else. There are the hurried ones, who restlessly rush around the world in order to make decisions that are constantly becoming less meaningful. There is the young surrogate mother, who doesn't want to give back the child until the parental guardians listen to her suggestions on how to care for it. And ...

With his film, Alexander Kluge has seized upon a genre that originated in the tabloid press: "Miscellaneous News", those items that don't make it to the front page but that are willingly read after thumbing through the last page. More often than not, they are more fascinating, entertaining, thought-provoking or funnier than the actual headline story. Kluge's "last page" introduces us to Max, the waiter, who enters into a fictitous marriage with a woman from Senegal for money - with two women in their final hours - with a case of death at the wrong time - with the lie of Nina Petrowa - with two brothers in the Stalingrad "cauldron" - with a retrospect of the days in the summers of 1914, 1923, 1939 and 1986 (when not only the sun was shining).

This is the way Alexander Kluge outlines his film: "The viewer knows the character of the history teacher Gabi Teichert from GERMANY IN AUTUMN. In that movie, there is a scene in a snowy landscape. Gabi Teichert is digging. Subsequently, I made the movie THE PATRIOT. Again, it is about Gabi Teichert. Now she is digging deeper. Everyone knows how to handle cars or pieces of wood; but how can the history of our beautiful country be handled? In her search, Gabi Teichert deals with wartime bombings, the party congress of the German Social Democratic Party, she searches to find the meaning of the body, comes into conflict with her superiors, encounters myths, verifies the relation of a love story to history, etc.: And she does it all in a hands-on, practical manner."
