A tale of tow men: Lukas Berlinger, scientist, adventurer and industrialist and Johannes Roeder his school friend. Both fall in love with the same woman and both survive the Nazi era, but their lives and morals take diametrically opposed turns. Berlinger smuggles persecuted people to Switzerland, Roeder joins the Nazi party. After the war, during Germany's economic rise, Berlinger rejoins his family's chemical company, but Roeder, now a real estate tycoon, claims the plant?

At the age of 82, Lina Braake loses her home. The bank has plans to develop the site and her house is about to be pulled down. Against her will, she is placed in an old people´s home on the outskirts of the city. The shock of her move renders Lina passive to what is happening to her. But some of the inmates take an interest in her and it slowly becomes clear that the bank has cheated her...

Paul is reminiscent of his grandfather who used to say: "In the beginning there was light - and the light went out." His grandfather was the town's movie teller.
