Around 1880 in Montana. Shepherd Alaska drives his herd into a territory which just had been "cleaned" of Indians by the "Whites". Although on public land, the rancher Johnson objects to the shepherd's "intrusion". Alaska frees a young Indian,Tschetan - meaning falcon - who was kept prisoner by the rancher as a horsethief. In Hamburg, five children secretly intrude into a deserted house. After they have thoroughly inspected the premises, they start to build an ark in the cellar. They get into an argument, because one of them, Uwe, always wants to be in charge but never does any of the work. When Uwe decides to turn on the water, the other children chase him off. Uwe locks them in the cellar in revenge. The children realize this only after they are unsuccessful in turning off the water, which is gushing from the mains. After many fear-filled minutes, and through their mutual efforts, the children are able to escape the confines of the flooded cellar.

Two boys, Uwe and Dschingis, live in a shabby apartment house in Hamburg. Uwe's father is a bargeman. He usually comes home from work drunk and unloads his frustration on the family. All Uwe can think of is escape! Dschingis, on the other hand, lives with his mother. At home, he feels loved and accepted, but he is despised and teased by boys of his own age, and called a "wop".
