Anna (Sabine Bach) meets Martin (Hanns Zischler) on the Chamisso Square. He is an architect and has been commissioned to carry out a restructuring program for this neighborhood. Anna, who lives in the neighborhood, interviews him with a video camera. Martin gives her his card. At the meeting of the tenants' association, the topic of restructuring is discussed. In the story about a group of dropouts, the computer expert Faber (Bruno Ganz) meets an alleged dealer (Hanns Zischler) and through him a young actress (Dominique Laffin). The three players have a deal. Each of them does their own thing and enjoys the others. The love of money is what welds them all together. They plan a coup and want to get the money that they steal out of the country. But during their night time burglary in a major bank, a watchman gets killed. One of the figures has to be sacrificed for the plan to be successful. CLOSED CIRCUIT is a ramifying film, in which the characters are drawn to each other only to drift apart again; where reality increasingly resembles a cold, unfriendly computer world.

Rudolf Thome recites Goethe's "Wahlverwandschaften" in "Diary", by reporting about a childless couple in Berlin, whose greatest common feature seems to be their indifference towards each other. For Eduard (Rudolf Thome), a divorce seems to be the only solution, but Charlotte (Angelika Kettelhack) thinks that would be absurd, at least until she hasn't found a suitable substitute for her present partner. Eduard brings in his buddy (Holger Henze) to help him move out, while Charlotte has her girlfriend Ottilie (Cynthia Beatt) who has arrived from London. Gradually, new bonds are created and the lives of the friends trod down new paths.

A couple (Karin Thome and Eberhard Klasse), whose relationship can't hold up to the pressure of their financial and career problems, only have their child left as the remaining connecting link. But even their child becomes a pawn in their egoistic power games and possessiveness. The crisis reaches a peak first then, when the husband finds out about an affair that the wife is having and sets out to claim the same rights for himself. This takes him to New York, where he settles. The wife gets her hands on all the cash reserves and follows him there. In spite of the new location, they still remain a couple with a disturbed and insensitive miscommunication, that instinctively cling even more to each other in the new and alienating environment.

"The Microscope" is a subtle yet intense romantic comedy from Thome's trilogy "Formen der Liebe" (Forms of Love). It is a story about the highs and lows of a love relationship. It portrays the seemingly ancient fear that men have in regard to the fetters of family life and how a man (Vladimir Weigl) can free himself from this with, for instance, a new aquarium, a microscope or another woman. He thereby pursues typical male ambitions, but even fish and amoebas display natural mating habits. In addition, Maria (Adriana Altaras) doesn't let herself be dumped that easily and befriends her husband's new lover.
