In "Dress Rehearsal" the remarkable filmmaker Werner Schroeter forms a unique sight on the Nancy Experimental Theater Festival in France Therefore he puts the focus on "experimental" where the spirit of the festival faces the composition of the film. Shots of the actors as they perform are being mixed with commentaries by the director and by Mostefa Djadja. It is a vivid montage of different scenes like interviews of the artist or with an ex-professor, commentaries, performances that become even more fascinating through the adequate accompaniment of the music.

In a solitary region in Portugal, three people are drawn into a fatal dream. Chained to each other, they go mad in the cursed Rose House. Anna, who forsees the merciless death, her brutal son Albert, who is searching for the perfect rose and Fernando, a mute and a submissive victim. When Albert catches the mute man in the act of robbing the offertory box, he takes him prisoner and forces him to be his lover. The love relationship between the men becomes increasingly excessive. The prisoner flees only to return and voluntarily put himself back in chains. This continues until the image of the lover begins to merge more and more with that of the ideal rose.
